Psalm 91:1 He that dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I love reading Psalm 91. It makes feel like a little child curled up in the lap of my dad, safe and sound.
I love my secret place. I have a spot in my office where I have my Bible, my prayer list, my devotion book, and especially my journal. I spend every morning there reading the Word, praying, talking to Jesus, and being refreshed in His presence. I write everything in my journal. When I’m going through a tough time, I can read my journal and see how God brought me through before. Trust is built to rely on Him again.
How do you start a secret place in your life? God tells us how in Ps 91:14 “Because he set his love on Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high because he has known My name.” When we give our life over to Jesus, the one who paid for it with His blood, we establish a relationship with Him. We become His beloved and He becomes ours.
When we love Jesus, we build our relationship by spending time with Him reading His Word, praying, worshipping Him. We make Him our dwelling place, we draw near to Him and He responds by drawing near to us. Ps 91:15 He shall call upon Me and I shall answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him.
All relationships must be maintained. There must be a daily activity of communicating with the ones we love. When we maintain a daily relationship of communicating with Jesus, He will deliver us from all evils. Ps 91:3 Surely, He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence.
What’s your snare? Is it drugs, alcohol, gossip, entertainment? What have you put in front of your relationship with Jesus? How do you get back in right relationship?
Just like any relationship, you must make good choices. Find that time that you can spend with Jesus alone. Maybe it’s early in the morning. Maybe it’s late evening. Do what David did in Ps 91:2-3 “I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust.” Surely, He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence. Let Jesus become your refuge, your safe place where you can confide in Him everything on your heart.
What else do you need to do to keep a healthy relationship with Jesus? Ps 91:4 says ‘His truth shall be your shield and buckler.’ Where do you find God’s truth? In the Bible. You build your relationship with Jesus as you learn more about him by reading His Word.
There is nothing more important in life than connecting with others, building relationships, communities, families, and the most important relationship is the one you have with Jesus. Find your secret place today. Start building on your faith by drawing close to Jesus in that secret place. You won’t regret it.
